With the rising cost of gasoline we thought it might be fun to put one of these so called “Fuel Saving” products to the test. So we contacted the guys at Fuel Magic to find out what their product was all about.

The official line from Fuel Magic: Fuel Magic approaches fuel savings by incrementally improving combustion, lubrication and engine cleanliness at the same time. Fuel Magic shows a proven average fuel savings of about 8% using U.S. fuels. This is a proven average, not a maximum potential. Since a 2 oz. squirt bottle treats 80 gallons of gasoline you can expect to save about 8% of that--or 6 gallons. Fuel mileage improvement varies widely with the type of fuel, condition of the engine and driving conditions. In parts of the world using less refined fuels the average fuel savings is over 20%.

Our test vehicles: 2003 Honda Civic LX, 2005 Ford Explorer SportTrac 4x4, 2008 Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Results:
2003 Honda Civic – Overall MPG increase in my daily commute, up from 36 to 38mpg average to 40 to 42mpg. These results continued after I stopped using Fuel Magic in this vehicle for roughly a month and 80 gallons of unleaded. Providing an average increase of 4 MPG City/Highway. (Vehicle tested using 87 octane unleaded)

2005 Ford Explorer 4x4 – The explorer was being driven on city streets primarily and the MPG in this bad boy was averaging 16 to 17mpg. Fuel Magic did not have the nearly the same result in the Explorer, however it did increase the overall MPG by 1mpg to a whopping 18mpg overall. Not bad for a full time four-wheel drive 9 passenger SUV in city driving conditions… (Vehicle tested using 87 octane unleaded)

2008 Dodge Ram pickup truck, now this one was fun, we handed a box of Fuel Magic to a friend of the family. Specifically because we wanted a completely unbiased opinion, that and we had one vehicle that had results on the high end of the spectrum while the other had minor gains.

The Dodge Ram averages 16 to 19mpg. The results for the Ram were equally as impressive as with the Civic. The MPG actually bumped up to 24mpg freeway on the 2nd fill up using Fuel Magic. (Vehicle tested using 87 octane unleaded)

I have tried other fuel additives that had promised fuel economy gains in the past, with zero net gain. I was frankly surprised to find that Fuel Magic increased overall fuel mileage; I would definitely use this product, and will again as fuel prices begin going up this summer.

With the results from the Civic and Ram; we believe we can safely put Fuel Magic in the category of Products that are definitely worth picking up.
